Gainesville: Vote NO on Amendment One!

Conservatives in Gainesville Florida are attempting to take away protections that have been set out for LGBT people by using a ballot measure.

The ballot initiative says the following:

"Shall the City Charter Be Amended to prohibit the adoption or enforcement of ordinances, regulations, rules, or policies that provide protected status, preferences, or discrimination claims based on classification, characteristics, or orientations not recognized by the Florida Civil Rights Act. The act recognizes, race, color, creed, religion, gender, national origin, age, handicap, marital and familial status. Additionally, this amendment voids existing ordinances concerning sexual orientation, gender identity, and other ordinances inconsistent with this amendment."
This measure if passed on March 24th will take away Gainesville's right to protect groups that are not explicity listed in the Florida Civil Rights Act. Sadly, sexual orientation nor gender identity are protected classes in the states general civil rights protections laws.

Please vote against discrimination and help get the word out by canvassing and phone banking to ensure the defeat of Amendment 1 by going to Equality is Gainesville's Business.

Did they have to put the guy with breasts in the commercial? I mean really, if the objective is to get citizens to vote "no" then why put something so controversial in the ad.

Anon - isn't the ad controversial itself? I assume "the guy with the breasts" is there for diversity. If you're really so tempted as to take away a group of people's rights I don't think "the guy with the breasts" is going to stop you or push you any further.

The sad thing is only certain people are allow to vote. Even though the amendment effects all of Gainesville, you have to live within the city limits and not just the incorporated parts. Doesn't matter if your address says Gainesville, you must live down town in the city limits.

Why are we the only group that has every right on a ballot? Are we not a recognized minority. I give up on this country.

It is beyond ridiculous and I wonder if there could be a point made by making a dumb amendment and getting it to pass that would somehow make people aware how stupid and slippery of a slope this could be.

I had a bad feeling that in the wake of votes to take away marriage equality, that the right wing would not stop there. Looks as if I am right. I am so sick of this crap...we are probably the only minority whose rights are actually up for a vote.

Queers United your website is beyond slow and it's really annoying.

I'm sorry it is slow for you, do you think it is the amount of graphics that makes the load time poor?

Anon, I like how you figure the LGBT community is one entity with no individual thought or, you know, people.

Guys, I'm sorry I didn't vote for McCain *pout*

wow. that one person who talked about obama not going to get anything done sounds just like my father. you think republicans are the only ones to get things done? you're ignorant. but anyway, if this happens, i will lose all hope i had for america. i can't believe it's like this everywhere. oh, like, how this country was founded on freedom of religon[well partially] and people are going to preach to me about how i have to be christian, no, catholic, and get on my knees and beg for forgiveness so i don't burn in hell for being bisexual, all i have to say is, if i don't believe in him why would he believe in me?
to me, it seems like our country is trying to go back to the way we were in england before we left to america. and that my friends, if very messed up.

wow rant. xD

first of all "guy with breasts" does not have breasts, he wears a brace because of his disability. second of all the obama shirt wasnt intentional, that kid wears them all the time. its not supposed to be some type of lgbt message. third of all, amend one would have taken away rights for lesbian gay bisexual AND transgender people, or anyone else protected under sexual orientation or gender identity. and lastly, it didn't pass, 58.32% voted no.
